When I was still married, we moved our family to California from Georgia, and we bought a house to renovate. I had to pick paint colors for the walls, and I will never forget the name of one of the colors. Dunn-Edwards chose to call the blue that adorned my kitchen walls Smoke and Mirrors.
Ironically, smoke and mirrors also accurately described my marriage in its final years.
I still live in the house today, and when I see the extra can of paint in my garage, I cannot help but chuckle at the foreshadowing held in a paint’s name.
From the outside, we looked like we were living the dream. Even my husband’s wardrobe reflected the look of leisure. White linen pants, Gucci flip-flops, custom-made dress shirts, and a designer fedora were staples in his closet. He gave the air of living on permanent vacation. We had the beautiful large house overlooking the Pacific Ocean and two little girls attending the local elementary school. He took trips halfway around the world just to surf. Luxury cars lined our driveway. We were living large, and it showed in our lifestyle from our clothes to the extravagant vacations on private jets. Money was abundant in our lives, and my husband was skilled at making it. People looked at us and thought,
They have it all.
I’m here to tell you it was all camouflage, but I didn’t recognize the smoke screen we had created until my marriage came crashing down.

What are you reading?

Love Does by Bob Goff. I enjoy the playful rapport he establishes with the reader. I don’t read much fiction because I like to learn, and I feel there are not enough hours in the day to read anything that doesn’t teach me.  Also, I am rereading High Conflict People in Legal Disputes by Bill Eddy. I am fascinated at the large number of high conflict personalities in contentious divorces and how that affects the entire family. I continue to revisit the book The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. It helps me find balance in a very busy world.

Where do you get your ideas?

My real life provides an endless supply of literary material and comedic fodder to write about.

Who is most likely to read your book?

My typical reader is a person that feels intense sadness and a sense of loss after a breakup. She is stuck in the pain of divorce and cannot seem to advance forward, but my book is not limited to only people going through a breakup. It could help anyone experiencing a life transition; I teach how to regain one’s footing after any kind of setback in life.

What gets you up in the AM?

My drive to help others gets me excited about the day ahead. I feel called to do coaching; it’s not work to me, it’s who I am. There was a reason I went through the pain of divorce, and it was so I can guide others to a place of peace.

What would be the ultimate assignment/undertaking?

I dream about traveling the world and coaching couples on how to create a sacred marriage. This could come in the form of nurturing a broken relationship of many years or teaching newlyweds how to maintain the sanctity of marriage. It’s something that I visualize on a regular basis. Above all, I want to help couples avoid the pain of divorce.
Not everything has turned out as I imagined.
Mostly, it has turned out better.

Book Reviews

“India’s willingness to be vulnerable, humble, transparent and bold in a season of major trial in her life is inspiring! I think it’s a good read not only for someone going through a divorce but for anyone interested in understanding the power of a personal relationship with Christ and how God uses ALL things including suffering to transform us for His Glory. It energized me as a mother to trust God’s word; “Raise up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6. It’s a testimony to the fact that we can’t force our beliefs on our kids but can only share where our strength and peace come from. Thank you India for answering the call to write this book!”

-Jodi Adams

“Author India Kern’s journey from the unseen valley of divorce into her new transformed life was a wonderful read. Its a book about surviving divorce and aligning yourself with your God, as you know him to help you realize when your full potential and live the life he has called you for. You don’t need to be going through a divorce to read this book because you can use her tools for any areas in your life where you might be struggling. Thank you India for your raw, vulnerable words and reminding us you can do anything if you have faith.”

-Kristy Johnson

“Thank you, India. You helped create an atmosphere to make me feel safe, where I was able to face some of my own issues.”

~ M.P.S.

“India and I had four coaching sessions together. India asked the right questions to reveal the areas of my life where I remain stuck. Divorce was my big transition, and it threw me for a loop. It was a comfort to know India has walked my same path, and she understands the stress of divorce. She’s an excellent guide, and I highly recommend India as your personal coach for whatever transition you may be experiencing.”
